Why Clean a Roof?
Roof Cleaning has been performed for a quite number of years due to an ever increasing need to keep the roofs of homes clear of the debris buildup that occurs with the growth of algae and mildew, mold and fungus, leaves and pine straw that, over time and with seasonal changes.
Unfortunately, this buildup of unwanted material occurs naturally on the surface of Asphalt shingle roofs , with much of the debris and staining being brought onto the roof surface by wind, airborne algae (gloeocapsa magma), bird droppings, squirrels, etc.
Buildup of Algae, Mold, Mildew, Fungus, Pine Straw and leaf debris acids from Tannin Leaf Decomposition) can shorten the life span of roofing systems on both residential and commercial asphalt shingles as well as other forms of roofing materials as the granules that hold important UV protectors and silica that help to create binding agents are attacked and weakened over time by the root systems of these invasive forms of miniature plant life and other factors.
Most of the Streaking and ugly Staining homeowners and commercial property managers see on shingle roofs are caused by the Blue-Green type of Algae called, technically, Gloeocapsa Magma.
These detrimental roof eating plant life forms live to eat, breed, reproduce, die and then repeat the same process over and over again.
It is the dead carcasses that form the buildup of the blackening of roofs as the cells of the birth, feeding, reproduction, death and reoccurring process, gives way to layer after layer of "husking" or Residual "dead cell buildup" that leaves the nasty look and black conical streaks found commonly on the "wet side" of the roof.
The "WET" part of most roofs is the area that receives the least amount of sun and is typically shaded more of the day than any other areas of a roof which typically sees more dry time.
These shaded or "wet" areas hold moisture and other debris on the roof surfaces, LONGER, and this "bed" of warm, wet, limestone fertilized roofing along with additional roof debris, such as leaves and or pine straw can usually be the first area of a roof affected by roof algae.
Unfortunately, the modern roofing materials available in the last 20 years or so have made this roof algae a problem that is reaching epidemic proportions around the USA, Europe and the world.
One CULPRIT of this growing Algae problem which owes its undeserved fame to is from manufacturers use of Algae's main snack food, which is the mineral, LIME, which is naturally occurring and, as such, in nature poses no serious threat.
Once, however, roofing manufacturers started to add this material (Crushed Limestone) to be used as a filler to extend the manufacturing process of petroleum based roofing materials, this has caused the Algae to seek out and feed on it's preferred snack food, in the worst of places, which is on the asphalt roofing surfaces of homes and business.
Many of the Roofs installed in the last 20-30 years have an abundance of crushed Limestone contained within them.
And as the Gloeocapsa Magma algae finds its way onto one roof in a neighborhood, and starts to feed and make a new home, since it is an airborne spore, it can "Roof Jump" and SPREAD, depositing itself on other roofs in a neighborhood or community creating epidemic outbreaks in more and more areas, both in rural as well as large towns, cities and communities around the country.
